Terms of Service

Last updated: 2026-11-08

These terms govern use of the Mailer software ("the Software") and this documentation site. By installing or using the Software, you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use the Software.

1. What the Software is

Mailer is free, open-source, self-hosted software distributed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0. You run it on infrastructure you control. The project does not operate a hosted service, does not host your data, and has no access to your mailbox.

2. Licence

Your use of the source code is governed by the AGPL-3.0. That licence grants you the rights to run, study, modify, and redistribute the Software on its terms — including its requirement that modified versions offered over a network make their source available. Nothing in these terms restricts rights the AGPL-3.0 grants you; where these terms conflict with that licence as applied to the code, the licence prevails.

3. Your responsibilities

Because you self-host the Software, you are responsible for:

  • The account you connect. You must have the right to access the mailbox and to forward its contents. Connecting a mailbox you are not authorised to access is prohibited.
  • The content you forward. You are responsible for complying with the law applicable to you — including data protection law — when forwarding mail content to a third-party service. If the mailbox contains other people's personal data, that obligation is yours.
  • The host you deploy on. Securing it, patching it, controlling access to the configuration, token, and state files, and taking backups.
  • Your provider's terms. IMAP access, OAuth2 usage, and automated access are also governed by your mail provider's terms, and by Telegram's or Discord's terms for delivery.

4. Acceptable use

You may not use the Software to:

  • access a mailbox or system without authorisation;
  • intercept, forward, or disclose communications unlawfully;
  • send spam, or forward mail to recipients who have not consented to receive it;
  • violate the terms of the mail, notification, or hosting provider involved.

5. Third-party services

The Software connects to services the project does not control — your IMAP provider (for example Google), and Telegram or Discord for delivery. Their availability, terms, and privacy policies are their own. The project is not responsible for their acts, outages, policy changes, or data handling.

In particular, Google periodically changes authentication requirements. Keeping the Software working with your provider is your responsibility.

6. No warranty

The Software is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. This mirrors section 15 of the AGPL-3.0.

Mail notification is not guaranteed to be timely, complete, or delivered at all. Do not rely on the Software as the sole channel for time-critical or safety- critical messages.

7. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the authors and contributors are not liable for any claim, damages, or other liability — whether in an action of contract, tort, or otherwise — arising from, out of, or in connection with the Software or its use. This includes lost messages, missed notifications, data loss, exposure of credentials caused by misconfiguration, and any consequence of forwarding mail to a third party.

8. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold the authors and contributors harmless from claims arising out of your use of the Software, your violation of these terms, or your infringement of the rights of any third party.

9. This documentation site

The documentation is provided for information. It is not legal advice, and the security and privacy guidance describes the Software's design rather than guaranteeing a particular outcome. Content may change without notice.

10. Changes to these terms

These terms may be updated as the Software evolves. The "last updated" date above reflects the most recent revision; the history is available in this repository. Continuing to use the Software after a change means you accept the revised terms.

11. Termination

You may stop using the Software at any time by uninstalling it and deleting its configuration, token, and state files. These terms apply for as long as you use the Software.
